10 facts you will not find on the internet about Santorini (Greece)

1. Free seats. The airport in Santorini has very small waiting rooms on the first floor, but don`t worry, if you go upstairs to the terrace area you will have free, comfortable chairs with a panoramic view that lets you watch the planes land and take-off.

2. Warm clothes and sunglasses. Be sure to bring warm clothes with you. A leather jacket is a good option. The weather in  Santorini is very windy almost at all seasons,  and the wind speed is approximately 30-40 km/hr. And to protect your eyes from wind and hot sun, don`t forget to wear sunglasses.

3. Rent a car or quad bike. Renting a quad bike or a car and driving around the island is the most common way to see the whole Island! The prices are similar for both – 25 euro/day. And gas is €1.80-€1.90 per 1 liter. This is a medium price for an island such as Santorini. Fuel capacity for a quad bike is typically 10 liters, which is approximately 2000km of driving (about twice around the island). But watch out! There are age limits to rent vehicles. You have to be 23 to rent a car, but you can rent a quad bike or motorcycle if you’re 21. The service staff said that all of this depends on local insurance rules. To rent those vehicles you also need a working credit card and an international driver ’s license. If you are going to rent a quad bike – then be sure that you have a big, comfortable luggage box and helmets with special glasses on them. Do not ride without a helmet; it will definitely come in handy.

4. Don`t follow internet travel guides to local see sights. There are more places to visit than you can find on the internet! Just open an App like«Google Trips» or «Google maps» and zoom into it. You will be shocked at how many places Santorini has to visit.

5. Three beaches. There are three beaches at in Santorini – with Black, White, and Red Sands. All of them are amazing! And the best beach to visit during the winter is definitely Perrisa Beach. It has got one of the most beautiful churches you will ever see, and the best places to capture sunsets on your camera.

6. Food. I have a very positive impression of local restaurants. All of the food on this Island is delicious, and it doesn’t even matter what kind of food you have (Asian, Greek, Indian, Turkish, Italian, etc). The Greek know how to do their best in cooking. The Average price for a meal for one person is 20-30 euro, which is expensive to compare with Europe, but portions are huge similar to what Americans have. So don`t be greedy, share your food with friends. I want to recommend my favorite restaurant to you:  «Captain Dimitris», which is located in Akrotiri. It is a very cozy and "home sweet home " place! The owners of this restaurant are a Greek couple!  They cook old Greek, traditional recipes ... very, very delicious! We have eaten the best moussaka in the world there! And they have an AMAZING view of the mountains and the sea!

7. Wine of Santorini. They sell lots of red and white wines, but most of them are cheap and taste like pee. Rid yourself of the thought that cheap wine can be tasty. Normal wine coasts 25-30-40 euro for a bottle. Good quality Santorini wine is very tasty and sweet. By the way, winemaking is one of the few businesses that exist on the island. In any city of Santorini, you can find a grapevine that points to the development of a winemaking business.

8. Soap and water. There is quite salty but soft water in the local canal system.  In my mom`s opinion, who is a biologist, such water can cause an allergy. This water is used for cooking in restaurants, so be careful, if it necessary, take allergy tablets with you. They sell volcanic ash soap as a souvenir for tourists. It doesn`t have a soaping effect - I had a feeling that I washed in mud. It`s better to buy their organic olive oil soap.

9. The truth of Oia. Oia is the most beautiful place in the whole of Santorini. It`s true that this town has the most beautiful sunsets, which is because of a result of its location at the northern end of the island. And it has got lots of cute, white, concrete houses (caves – named by local Greeks). Try to order 2-3 nights at the famous hotel called «Vip Suites By Resort», which is right on the rock cliff. It’s very expensive, but you will regret it if you do not get a room there.

10. Local people. All young Greeks moved abroad to build betters lives for themselves than what their parents have in Santorini. The entire business of the island is driven by tourism. In Perissa and Akrotiri you can find huge Greek families which have a family business such as restaurants, hotels and car rental companies. Usually, they are cheerful and friendly and know how to cook a better meal for you. The latest trend in male fashion is to grow out their dark Greek beards and mustaches. And it makes them look gorgeous.
